Keap Candles, November’s Client of the Month, is a locally-owned candle company whose mission is to make better candles with a zero-waste approach. Owned and operated for more than seven years by Steve Tracy and Harry Doull, the business was born from a philosophical question: In an always on-world, how can we reconnect with ourselves and restore our balance with nature?
In 2015, after moving to Brooklyn, Steve and Harry saw themselves and others grow more and more disconnected from the world around them, and began to wonder how that might change if more people took time to light a candle every evening.
According to their website, this inspired them to dive into all things candles. They took perfumery classes and toured factories, and their hard work resulted in Keap Candles—a candle company dedicated to restoring both you and the planet. They do this through a virtually zero-waste approach (their packaging is 100% plastic-free and the candle tumblers are reusable), and all-natural coconut wax is used for a clean and complete burn.
When it comes to scents, Keap offers a variety of well-balanced compositions that “brilliantly capture nature’s most evocative scents,” developed by working alongside legendary master perfumer Christophe Laudamiel. Some of the company’s most popular candle scents include Wood Cabin, Lavender + Petals, and Northlands . (For a full list of available scents, click here.)
Every Keap candle is hand poured at their studio, located in Kingston, NY, and can be purchased directly from their website. They offer a unique monthly or bimonthly candle subscription (a fun idea for that person on your holiday shopping list that has it all!), and a “Scent-To-Home Sampler Set” option that includes eight tea candles, allowing you to discover your favorite Keap scent. (And if you’re local, be sure to subscribe to their newsletter—they’re hoping to open for local pick-up in the near future!)
Keap Candles has been insured by Ryan & Ryan Insurance Brokers since moving to Kingston three years ago. When asked why the company chose R&R as their insurance agency, Steve responded by stating:
“Well… it was actually that Bob Ryan is a co-owner of the 79 Hurley Avenue building, so we were put in touch with him as part of our lease negotiations (small world!). But we’d also heard great things about Ryan & Ryan as we spoke with other local businesses.”
Steve went on to say that prior to moving to Kingston, they only consulted their insurance broker for renewals once a year.
“With Ryan & Ryan, I feel that we have a trusted advisor and someone really looking to help get us the best coverage possible. Working with Ryan & Ryan definitely feels like a meaningful relationship as opposed to a transaction, and we’re so appreciative of Kristin and Kerri for all their support.”
